After digging into all the research, I have to say that I disagree with that. I spoke with several publishers, agents, and writers on background for this story, all of whom said there was no possible way to anticipate what readers will like and what they won't. One group of scholars tried to develop an algorithm that would be able to predict which books would be bestsellers and which wouldn't based on a set of criteria found in existing bestselling novels, and still couldn't produce any replicable results an author could follow. In the end, the only guarantee a publisher has as to whether or not a book will be successful, is whether or not the author has a platform. But you can read more about that algorithm here if you're interested: https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2016/09/bestseller-ometer/499256/
